Will The Republican Party Return to Its Roots?
Why write a blog about the Republican Party? Because the Republican Party, at the national level, is in danger of slipping into irrelevance, and that would be bad for our country. Our two party system has served us well for over a century, helping our democracy steer a course that has helped the United States grow to be one of the greatest nations in history. But a two party system only works if there are two viable parties, each offering solutions, each competing for votes. This tugging and pulling brings both parties towards the middle and generally has led to be the best policy decisions. If there is only one party offering credible solutions and the other party cursing the very existence of government, we often wind up with weak legislation and sometimes even bad legislation. Our country suffers without the counter-weight of a second party, a second view of how best to proceed. The Republican Party, for all of its recent challenges, used to be that party, used to be the counter weight. And hopefully, it can be again – hopefully, the Republican Party can return to its roots and again be the party of rational, efficient government.
